Lotus Corniculatus and Condensed Tannins – Effects on Milk Production by Dairy Cows
نویسندگان
چکیده
Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) increases milk yield of dairy cows. An indoor feeding experiment using Friesian dairy cows in mid lactation was conducted to determine what proportions of the milk yield and composition changes were due to the condensed tannins (CT) in Lotus, and what proportions were due to factors associated with legumes (higher herbage intake and forage quality). Cows were fed either perennial ryegrass or Lotus, and were also drenched with either polyethylene glycol (PEG) to block the action of CT, or water. Milk yields (kg/cow/d) were higher on Lotus (21.24) than on Lotus+PEG (18.61), ryegrass (15.53) or ryegrass+PEG (15.49) indicating that CT contributed to 46% of the increased milk yield that resulted from feeding Lotus rather than ryegrass. CT had no effect on intake, but contributed to increased milk protein concentration, increased efficiency and decreased milk fat concentration.

Influence of Condensed Tannins from Ficus bengalensis Leaves on Feed Utilization, Milk Production and Antioxidant Status of Crossbred Cows
This study was conducted to examine the effects of condensed tannins (CT) from Ficus bengalensis leaves on the feed utilization, milk production and health status of crossbred cows. Eighteen crossbred dairy cows at their second and mid lactation (avg. BW 351.6±10.6 kg) were randomly divided into two groups of nine each in a completely randomized block design and fed two iso-nitrogenous suppleme...

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of processing protein meals by tannin extracted from pistachio by-product on apparent total tract digestibility, ruminal fermentation and performance of dairy cows. For tannin extraction, one kilogram of sun-dried pistachio by-products was immersed in four liters of water for 48 h. Then, pistachio by-products were removed from the water and ...
متن کاملLight and an exogenous transcription factor qualitatively and quantitatively affect the biosynthetic pathway of condensed tannins in Lotus corniculatus leaves.
The effects of increasing light and of a heterologous bHLH transcription factor on the accumulation of condensed tannins (CT) were investigated in leaves of Lotus corniculatus, a model legume species which accumulates these secondary metabolites in leaves as well as reproductive tissues. Light and expression of the transgene increased the level of CT in a synergistic way. To monitor how the cha...
متن کاملThe Relationships Between Milk Production and Some Blood Metabolites and Their Effects on Returning to Estrus in Lactating Holstein Dairy Cows
In this study, the relationships and correlations between milk production and some blood metabolites related to energy and protein balance and their effects were investigated on returning to estrus after AI in lactating Holstein dairy cows. Blood and milk samples were collected from sixty lactating Holstein dairy cows based on their reproductive status in 13-17 d post AI. BUN, MUN, glucose, tri...
متن کاملSn, a maize bHLH gene, modulates anthocyanin and condensed tannin pathways in Lotus corniculatus.
Anthocyanins and condensed tannins are major flavonoid end-products in higher plants. While the transactivation of anthocyanins by basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors is well documented, very little is known about the transregulation of the pathway to condensed tannins. The present study analyses the effect of over-expressing an Sn transgene in Lotus corniculatus, a model legume...
